This is an unprotected original master disk from our "vault". Unfortunately the PC graphics are all in 4-color CGA format; other computer formats used 16-color graphics earlier, so if you get a chance, check out the DSK version with an Apple emulator.
To run the PC version, double-click on NOVEL.EXE from Windows Explorer. This version is written for DOS, before anything really resembling "multitasking" was used. You started your computer with our disk in the drive, and when you were done and wanted to do something else, you restarted the computer. In Windows 95, you can just press Alt-Enter to view the game screen in a window. You can shut down the game application by clicking the "close" box (the "x" at the top-right corner of the window). You don't have to restart your computer when done.
This program was distributed on a double-sided disk. Since the disks were double-sided, they were not written to work on a two-disk-drive system. You will sometimes see a prompt that says "Turn your disk over". When that happens, just "load" the other disk in the set.
Use the "side 2" disk to start the game. The Comprehend adventures all "booted" from side two to load the game essentials, then ran most of the program accessing the data on side one.
Transylvania's packaging included a business card with this information:

This PC Archive is re-engineered from a production disk. The protection was removed, but you cannot run the game directly. Special thanks to Dave Grebe and Paul David Doherty for the patch. The PC graphics are all in 4-color CGA format; other computer formats used 16-color graphics, so if you get a chance, check out the DSK version with an Apple emulator.
To run the PC version, double-click on NOVEL.BAT from Windows Explorer. You can only run NOVEL.EXE from a floppy disk. The BAT file convinces the system that drive a: is the NOVEL directory. In Windows 95, you can press Alt-Enter to view the game screen in a window. You can shut down the game application by clicking the "close" box (the "x" at the top-right corner of the window). You don't have to restart your computer when done.
After exiting the game, you can restart the computer to make drive a: your floppy disk again, or you can go to the Start menu (or a DOS prompt) and type the following line:

Crimson Crown's packaging included a parchment with the following three riddles, which are needed when you find the Gryphon:
UNTO THINE EYES ALONE Hands I do not have, yet I grasp so tight. I love darkness, my enemy is light. Both the mighty and low know me well, For in the hearts of men do I dwell! I wonder as I wander: where am I? I shed tears, yet I cannot cry, I trek but cannot walk, swim, or fly, I am born to die. Say, what am I? I am, I'm not. I visit young and old, Some I make timid and some I make bold, Unwise is the one who pokes fun at me. Beware, for I am a shadow of thee.
